Prayagraj Airport has earned the 13th spot out of all domestic airports in India, according to state government reports. The airport’s successful operation made the decision to convert the current domestic airport to an international one prior to the Mahakumbh in 2025 easier.

The Mahakumbh Mela is a significant Hindu pilgrimage and festival that is observed every twelve years. One of the world’s largest peaceful gatherings is reportedly taking place at the festival. Prayagraj, Haridwar, Nashik, and Ujjain are the four main pilgrimage sites where the festival is observed. The most recent Mahakumbh Mela, which took place in Prayagraj in 2013, attracted nearly 120 million festivalgoers, making it the largest religious gathering in history. The festival is so well-known that it has earned a spot on the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity maintained by UNESCO!

As an international airport, Prayagraj Airport would make traveling easier for visitors arriving from outside of India. A significant number of foreign visitors attend the festival as well, coming to experience it firsthand.
